Lafayette Coffee Roasters (283-9035) and Levy's Bagels (283-6612) right next door are both open early enough to start a hungry cyclists day. They are located at 960 and 961 Moraga Rd., two blocks below Mt. Diablo Blvd. If coffee alone is what you need to get you going, Gepetto's Cafe is a couple blocks north at 3653 Mt Diablo Blvd. (284-1261).
The trail itself begins at Pleasant Hill Rd. and Olympic Blvd. where you can pick up maps and park a car if need be. Once you reach the Moraga end of the trail, one food option we found is to buy picnic foods at the Safeway located there. There is also Bianca's Deli, which features sunny outside seating. The deli is at 1480-A Moraga Rd. (376-4400).
If you feel like treating yourself to an elegant meal, bike back up the hill and head a few blocks west of Hank and Frank's Bike Shop where you will find Tourell Cafe and Bar. Tourell is just beyond Moraga Rd. at 3565 Mt. Diablo Blvd. (284-3565).
The Lafayette-Moraga recreation trail has greatly enhanced the quality of life for its area residents for decades and Cycle America wants you to discover it so that you can experience a Greenway first hand. Then, you will understand the power of National Bicycle Greenway!!
The Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail is one of our favorite bike routes because it is an excellent working model of Cycle America's plan for the National Bicycle Greenway. The Lafayette-Moraga trail is a path for equestrians, hikers and cyclists. Nearly eight miles long, it passes through Lafayette and Moraga's prime residential and watershed land.
All levels of cyclists can enjoy this trail. Advanced cyclists can use it to warm up for the more challenging terrain of the back side of the Oakland, Berkeley and East Bay hills which lay just beyond the trail's end in Moraga. For families, parents can use the trail's safe environment to help young cyclists practice riding skills that they need for the open road. For anyone, the Lafayette-Moraga trail makes a great outing.
