Palo Alto Hard Ride

Hard Ride (39.9 mi): From University Ave. on the Stanford side of El Camino Real, University Ave changes names to Palm, take Palm for a couple of blocks to a right on Arboretum to a left on Sand Hill and begin an easy climb above the Stanford University campus. As you Leave town, traffic thins and the ride enters grassy hills before you then turn right on Old La Honda.

At Old La Honda the ride enters redwood forest and starts a three-mile extreme climb to a right on Skyline where the road settles down to rolling hills. The payoff of the ride comes during the last five miles on Skyline where cyclists get an incomparable view - Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon on the left and the entire San Francisco Bay area on the right - and a chance to build up huge speeds on a road hardly traveled by automobiles during the week.

Heavily trafficked Highway 92 takes the ride to Canada Rd, a road with fewer automobiles, and popular among local cyclists for its gentle rolling hills. The small village of Woodside presents the most confusing intersection of the ride - travel straight from Canada, not right or left. Take Manzanita to Sand Hill and backtrack to finish the ride.
