Monterey Rides

This is an updated group of rides that appeared in the 1991 Cycle America Regional Directory for California's Central Coast

From ABent4Rent go six easy blocks to the scenic off-road bike path on the way to Fisherman's Wharf as you then follow the shoreline into Pacific Grove. Keep to a moderate speed so you can keep an eye out for foot traffic as you pass by the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. At the spectacular Lover's Point, turn right onto Ocean View Blvd. and follow it around Point Pinos to the ocean side of Pacific Grove. The first right turn is 17 Mile Drive (after passing Asilomar State Beach), turn around here for a flat 12 mile round trip. For a more challenging loop, turn right and follow 17 Mile Drive all the way around Cypress Point (as you pass by Spanish Bay & Pebble Beach) from the entrance gate - nonresidents are required to sign a waiver, but bicycles may enter at no cost.

Marina Loop (35 mi. partly hilly): From Fisherman's Wharf ride Washington Street to a left turn on Fremont (expect heavy traffic). After 1/2 mile turn right on Aguajito just before Fremont enters Highway 1. Go under the freeway and make the first left onto Mark Thomas Dr. After about a mile, the county fairgrounds appear on your right. Take the next left to make the 1 block jog back over to Fremont. Turn right and follow it all the way through Seaside, about 2-1/2 miles where Fremont ends. Make a quick left under Highway 1 to get on the bike path. You can expect windy conditions as you follow this beautiful path 5 or 6 miles through Fort Ord to Marina. Turn right on Beach Road which becomes Reservation Road. You will leave the traffic behind after about 2 miles, as you follow Reservation Road all the way out to Route 68. This stretch is a scenic 7 or 8 miles, with one challenging climb followed by a very fast descent. Turn right on 68 to come back to Monterey (this road is rolling hills with several good climbs). Look for fast moving traffic, use the bike lane, and watch out for the narrow bridge. When you see the airport on the right side, turn right on Olmstead and left on Garden, which ends at Mark Thomas. A left takes you back to Aguajito.

Stu Reynolds, a locally renowned musician describes the Monterey rides you see here. Stu has rediscovered the joy of cycling on a recumbent bicycle because hand injuries prevent him from riding a conventional upright .
