SUMMARY:Palo Alto to Oakland (over the Dumbarton) - NEW!!
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis is a ride every Bay Area cyclist needs in his trophy  case. To be able to say you pedaled your bicycle over the San Francisco Bay is an important right of passage for anyone who bikes in this region – to be able to know in your heart when you are out on the freeways and bridges that make this connection\, that you did it on a bicycle! With your own two legs!!\n \nWhat’s more is  that once we reach the Oakland Airport at the edge of the Bay\, we will be using several important pathways that Ron Bishop played a big part in advocating for.  It is here that we look forward to being joined by the group Ron founded with Mary Ann Blackwell called  the Bay Area Easy Riders Touring Group. \n \n \nPeter Wagner\,  probably the most experienced Kinetic Sculpture  racer alive will be riding with us!! \nROUTE \nMartin Krieg explores the Dumbarton on Eagle\nBlogged in 2009\, the maps the above  alludes to are no longer on line and this was is first crossing of it on the Eagle \n \nJoin us at: \nPalo Alto City Hall at 8AM \nBronco Billy’s Pizza Palace\, 3940 Smith Street at 10:30 AM in Union City \n Hilton Oakland Airport at Hegenberger and Doolittle at 12:30. \nLet us know you are coming! \nnote: Return to Palo Alto is easy and fun. BART has a station right at Oakland City Hall that you can use to connect with CalTrain at the Milbrae station. Another option is to get off at Embarcadero and ride the waterfront for five miles to the CalTrain station at 4th & King almost across from AT&T Park. \n Palo Alto to Serve as Cornerstone for National Bicycle Greenway \n  \nMayors’ Ride Overview Since 2002\n2003 Santa Cruz NBG Fest | 2002 Santa Cruz NBG Fest | Cycle America 2000 | 2000 Lighthouse Send Off \nWhy we do Mayors’ Rides | NBG Podcasts \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n More\n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:NBG Tour of Reno
DESCRIPTION:First annual tour of National Bicycle Greenway Anchor City\, Reno\, NV. \nDetails Soon! \nMartin Krieg Aug 2015 Research Tour of Reno \n\nKrieg with Reno Mayor Bob Mackay at left and Councillor Dave Aizzi \nIn addition to the Reno tour\, join Martin Krieg on his Eagle HiWheel bicycle as he also replicates a memorable part of  the 2009 Mayors’ Ride.  He will take you on some of  the oasis that runs across Reno\, five miles to  Sparks. On his way from San Francisco to Salt Lake City  per this STORY\, this is the pathway he used to get across this part of the state. On what ended up being a  1000-mile ride\, he became the first man to actually pedal (not walk) a HiWheel bicycle over the Sierras and across Nevada\, the most mountainous state in the Union. His was also the first unsupported HiWheel ride to cross the 100-mile Salt Lake basin in Utah per this account. \n \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n More\n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:NBG/Hallmark Inn Tour de Davis
DESCRIPTION:  \nOur first Tour of Davis\, we invite you to come see what the Bike Capital of America and home of the first bike lane in the USA looks like from a bicycle seat. Our non-athletic\, casual 12-mile tour takes place in the cool of a Saturday morning. \n  \nIf you are coming from out of the area\, the three-star Hallmark Inn\, which has long been the accommodation center for Davis Double riders\, is offering National Bicycle Greenway riders discounted room nights! If you pedal Bike Party Davis (a separate event) the previous evening\, you can use this lodging opportunity to see what the darkness hid from you as you then see Davis in the light of day! \n\nDavis Commons \nOur ride starts  a block from the Hallmark\, at Whole Foods\, adjacent to the only bike/ped tunnel on the entire Lincoln Hwy. In 1914\, the Lincoln became the first coast-to-coast car road\, when it connected New York City with San Francisco  (Lessons Learned from America’s First Coast-to-Coast Highway in Building the NBG <link> from  “How America Can Bike and Grow Rich\, the National Bicycle Greenway in Action“). At  the Gateway to Davis\, at what is also called the Davis Commons\,  the small park nestled in between massive old growth shade trees and a handsome wall of business storefronts\, Whole Foods will send us on our way with energy food and drink. \n  \n \n  \nOur ride ends at Hot Italian Pizza Bar\, also in the Davis Commons\,  A  huge sponsor of Davis cycling\, they will offer samples of their genuinely nutritious pizza that we can taste before we buy \n  \nWhat could be better? \nCelebrate Davis in comfort and bicycle style as you see for yourself what makes Davis such a worthy place to pedal a bike. And why this is the model the National Bicycle Greenway wants to see replicated in all 20 of the Anchor Cities that connect San Francisco with Washington\, DC! \nWith aded thanks to Kens Bike-Ski-Board for making this event possible. \n \nLet us know you are coming!! \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n More\n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:Bicycle Tour & Travel Expo - Cincinnati Sharonville Convention Center
DESCRIPTION:Set for Sept 26-27\, in Cincinnati at the Sharonville Convention Center\, is  the Bicycle Tour & Travel Expo. Martin Krieg will be speaking there per the following description: \nMain Street USA\, How Businesses that Serve Cyclists will build the National Bicycle Greenway: \nMartin Krieg will explain his plan and what will be the result once all the businesses that serve the needs of cyclists\, along the coast-to-coast bike route his group spent 17 years researching\, are identified and then sold. He will show how by wanting to bring the discretionary well-dollared travelers of the future\, long and short haul cyclists\, to their doorsteps\, growing numbers of American merchants will be the ones that lead the push for a bicycle heaven on earth\, the National Bicycle Greenway.

Behind camera\, Floyd Quan  \n\nRon Bishop\, at Lake Merrit with Bay Bridge\, Treasure and Angel Islands in background.\nTechnically a tidal lagoon\, Lake Merritt defines the downtown landscape of Oakland\,\ncovering 150 acres in the city center\, ringed with parkland\, paths\, and residential neighborhoods. \nWe  will ride the 3-mile Lake Merritt loop on our first annual celebration of Mr. Bike Oakland\, Ron Bishop‘s life. Ron used the bandstand at the upper end of the lake\, near the historic Grand Lake Theater\, to stage many of the rides he and Mary Ann Blackwell did with the Bay Area Easy Riders Bike Touring group they had formed. A lap of the lake that always followed was made possible by the 12th Street dam bikeway Ron had been instrumental in bringing about. \nRon used his professional skills\, public speaking talent and political connections to point his beloved city in the direction of it being the safe bike haven it is more and more becoming today. Ron knew the treasure awaiting cyclists in its hills and along its waterfront needed to be made both bikeable and accessible. It was this that he and NBG Director\, Martin Krieg saw in their mind’s eyes as they biked this emerald jewel in the center of the City of Oakland. \nIn the big picture\, the two of them also used Lake Merritt’s enchanted pathways to think out loud about Oakland’s important part in the coast-to-coast bike road\, the National Bicycle Greenway\, at BikeRoute.com. \n \n\nThis bridge at the end of the lake closest to the Bay was largely the brainchild of Ron Bishop who  championed it tirelessly. It allows walkers and cyclists to go around Lake Merritt without engaging with vehicles. \n  \n \n  \n \nThis award winning photo\, called Portals Onto the Lake\,  was shot by Ken Katz\, a cyclist friend of Ron’s and unofficial photographer for the Bay Area Easy Riders Touring Group. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nAbove pictures  from Ken’s Striking Lake Merritt photo album \nJoin the Ride \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n More\n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:8th San Francisco to Palo Alto
DESCRIPTION: Our 2015 ride will leave from the Golden Gate city\, instead of cycle to it – see HERE for an explanation. And below for why we feel Palo Alto is the true cornerstone for the National Bicycle Greenway. \nWith the San Francisco hills behind us in the morning\, the ride will be a lot easier than in years past. Ten miles before the end\, Whole Foods Redwood City will recharge us  with energy  food and drink before we end at Palo Alto Bicycles where a small reception is TBA. \nWe’ll take the 8:31 train from the CalTrain station at University and Alma and start riding from San Francisco an hour later. Try to be at the station at 8AM. You cannot be late!! You can also meet us at the 4th & King SF Caltrain at 9:38 and ride with us from there! \n Don Loomis – 2004 TransAm Vet Carol Brouilllet – Cookie Lady Waiting at South SF Light SF CalTrain station Yoriko & Lee with the Dalai Lama in Japan \n2103 Ride Report | 2014 Ride Report  \n Folsom & Sacramento stores On America’s first Bike Blvd \nROUTE \nBike Route\, mostly flat once you leave SF\, that runs fairly close to the railroad alignment that dates back to the time of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency.
