On Sunday May 5th, . 60 cyclists met at San Francisco City Hall for a bike tour of San Francisco. The tour \u00a0that ensued was led by long time local cyclist and\u00a0San Francisco Bicycle Ballet\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>director\u00a0Carla Laser<\/strong>.<\/div>\n

A casual paced \u00a0ride, our stops \u00a0included the\u00a0Mission Rock Pier 50<\/strong>\u00a0where local historian and one of the key players in introducing the Critival Mass rides to the world,\u00a0Chris Carlsson<\/a><\/strong>, explained the fascinating part it played in the changing shoreline of San Francisco’s bay.<\/div>\n

Another stop was at a five block tree filled \u00a0 neighborhood greenbelt few outside of the city even know to exist. Rare open space \u00a0in the middle of the city, it sits in the middle \u00a0of the small, South Park neighborhood<\/strong>. It was here that Chris explained how this bucolic setting had come to be before and after the Great Quake of 1906.<\/div>\n

At the quirky nonprofit Bike Hut<\/strong> on a bayside pier, not far from AT&T Park, another one of our stops, we were greeted by a large group including Andy Thornley<\/a><\/strong>, Dave Snyder <\/a><\/strong>and Jon Winston<\/strong><\/a> and a few other \u00a0of the\u00a0\u00a0SFBC board members\u00a0who oversee it<\/div>\n

We stopped at City Lights Books<\/strong> where L’il Mike\u00a0<\/strong>greeted us with his bullhorn. He gave us some historical background on the store and \u00a0pointed out \u00a0Jack Kerouac Alley<\/a>,<\/strong> next to \u00a0it, where the famous beat authors of the 50’s used to hang out.<\/div>\n

We perused Chinatown and numerous other sights where even more ambassadors helped us understand what we were seeing. These stops \u00a0included AT&T Park<\/strong> where the\u00a0San Francisco Giants play, Japantown,<\/strong> the Golden Gate Park Panhandle,<\/strong> Ocean Beach,<\/strong> Missions Dolores Park,<\/strong> the Castro<\/strong> and merchants that have long become part of the\u00a0San Francisco woodwork such as Pushbike,<\/strong> the Fillmore Domino Club,<\/strong> Mission Sk8boards,<\/strong> St Francis Fountain<\/strong> and Pops<\/strong>.<\/div>\n
