Since the most practical way to pedal a bicycle over the Bay from San Francisco or anywhere on the peninsula to the NBG terminus, Washington, DC, is via the Dumbarton Bridge, Palo Alto has now become an official NBG bicycle crossroads city. A gold level League of American Bicyclists, Bicycle Friendly City, and the former home of seminal bike activist, <a href=\"http:\/\/bikeroute.com\/NationalBicycleGreenwayNews\/2013\/03\/05\/ellen-fletcher-passes-away-but-her-powerful-efforts-for-cyclists-will-be-felt-forever-1-of-2-americas-pioneering-bike-activist-and-arguably-its-most-effective-succumbed-to-the-cancer-she-has\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellen Fletcher, RIP,<\/a> for whom <a href=\"http:\/\/bikeroute.com\/NationalBicycleGreenwayNews\/2014\/12\/21\/palo-alto-ellen-fletcher-bike-blvd-audiovisual-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America&#8217;s first Bike Blvd<\/a> was named, Palo Alto, has long been an important player on the national bike scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Toward that end, during longer breaks in the N<a href=\"http:\/\/bikeroute.com\/NationalMayorsRide2017\">ational Mayors&#8217; Ride<\/a>, \u00a0during the summer of 2017, two\u00a0California Mayors&#8217; Rides will end in Palo Alto. On Saturday, June 24, we are hoping \u00a0former Palo Alto Mayor, Yoriko Kishimoto, will be able to get\u00a0a contingent of local government and bike leaders to ride to \u00a0her city from a send off in San Jose. San Jose is another of this Nation&#8217;s leading bike cities, as Krieg details in his book about the NBG called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bikeroute.com\/HBGR-ebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How America Can Bike and Grow Rich, the National Bicycle Greenway in Action<\/a>&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For the following weekend. on\u00a0Saturday July 1, \u00a0we are working to get the group of bike riders who \u00a0annually ride from\u00a0Palo Alto to\u00a0San Francisco, to switch their direction of travel. \u00a0They will travel along the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the route we first \u00a0devised in 2003 that roughly follows the CalTrain rail line built during Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s presidency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The NBG is using these rides to also show why Palo Alto is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bikeroute.com\/indexNBGBikingCities.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one one of the\u00a020 cities<\/a> that anchor their bike route from San Francisco to Washington, DC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The 2017 Mayors&#8217; Ride season \u00a0is set to launch on Wednesday, May 25, when our ride from Berkeley ends in Oakland with a reception and proclamation from Mayor Libby Schaaf. From there, Tom Ayres, PhD, will travel with her\u00a0important document the 80 miles north to Davis, the Bike Capital of America, for the Davis NBG Fest on Saturday May 27.
