(A) Yousef Ali<\/strong>, a lifelong Davis resident and Chris Meyers<\/strong> and I met on Friday. We formalized the details that Yousef and I have been tossing about \u00a0when we see each other at Grocery Outlet (<\/strong>its WIKI<\/a>)<\/strong>, one of the main sponsors of of our upcoming event. Recently graduated, \u00a0Yousef is taking some time off from his career path by working at this fun food store because so many of his happy friends do too. Toward that end, there is\u00a0always laughter as well as\u00a0smiling customers every time I am there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yousef was the lead organizer for last year’s three-day Whole Earth Festival<\/strong> <\/a>that happens this upcoming weekend and attracts 30,000 people!! \u00a0In it’s 48th year, it is filled with art vendors, music\/dance performances, and educational workshops. And the year before,\u00a0Chris Meyers was the man in charge. Chris\u00a0now works as a delegate at the\u00a0California Democratic State Central Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk about firepower and being well connected, these two guys are all over it. Indeed things will super charge to a higher, even more exciting level!!<\/span><\/p>\n

(B) In 1879, The Solano<\/strong><\/a>, a 424-foot long ferry built in Oakland, began moving\u00a0entire passenger trains\u00a0from Benicia to Port Costa on the northern tip of the San Francisco Bay. And when it did, it rerouted the transcontinental railroad from Altamont Pass near Livermore to the Suisun Bay cities that trickled down from Sacramento such as Davis, Dixon, Martinez and Richmond\u00a0on their way to Oakland.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ten years before, Thomas Stevens would have missed Davis had he ridden his bike across America then. And yet today, Benicia and Port Costa are almost forgotten towns that today\u2019s Transamerica travelers, the cars and trucks on I-80, miss <\/span>because<\/span>\u00a0the interstate \u00a0they use is 10-15 miles away. This while Davis\u00a0remains\u00a0a noteworthy player\u00a0on the coast to coast travelways as it also keeps its link to the first TansAmerica car road, the Lincoln Hwy, alive as I\u2019ve shown you in previous\u00a0newsletters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(C) Bruce\u00a0Gallaudet, the man who shapes the City of Davis with his prolific writing about it, sees the big picture of the\u00a0National Bicycle Greenway as it relates to Davis. He also understands why I ride the Eagle<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0here to promote the NBG. (E) Juliana Inman<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the City of Napa councillor (standing next to me below) who received our 2009 Mayors’ Ride when I rode t<\/span><\/span>he Eagle Bicycle<\/span><\/span><\/span> to Salt Lake City per http:\/\/bikeroute.com\/NationalMayorsRide2009 has agreed to receive Tom Ayres<\/strong> when he comes in from Oakland with <\/span><\/span>Mayor Libby Schaaf<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>‘s<\/strong> 2017 NBG Proclamation on Friday May 26.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tom’s next stop is Winters on his way to our Saturday May 27 <\/span><\/span>Second Davis NBG Fest<\/span><\/span><\/span>. In Winters, <\/span><\/span>Kelly A Macy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> and <\/span><\/span>Eric Warp<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, will join him for the last 12 beautiful miles to our festival. (F) Juliana and I are working on the Whereas language for the Napa proclamation. Here is the gist of where it is headed:<\/span><\/p>\n

WHEREAS: In following the newly rerouted transcontinental railroad, in 1884, Thomas Stevens did not visit the City of Napa, but in 2017, he would not have missed it<\/span><\/p>\n

WHEREAS: the National Bicycle Greenway has determined that the best way to reach Davis, the Bike Capital of America, on their route to Washington DC, is through Napa,<\/span><\/p>\n

WHEREAS: The city of Napa \u00a0has ___miles of bike lanes, has ___bike racks, has great access to the wineries the Napa Valley,<\/span><\/p>\n

WHEREAS: thousands of cyclists pass through Napa every day in the summer months to enjoy our fabulous restaurants and other attractions<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked her if she could get her husband, a cyclist, and\/or\u00a0the Eagle Cycling Club to\u00a0fill in the blanks on the 3rd whereas section. And add any thing about Napa where bikes are concerned that make it attractive\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\"TammieDSF\"(G) Davis Swim and Fitness<\/strong><\/a>, \u00a0a health club that more and more serious \u00a0lifters seem to be joining almost on a daily basis here recently \u00a0is going to be exhibiting at our festival. Toward that end, I have come to find out that\u00a0Tammy Ten Broeck<\/strong>, the owner and a lifter herself, lives next to Mark Bell (WIKI<\/a>)<\/strong>, the owner of Super Training Gym and\u00a0a well known powerlifter with numbers like a\u00a01,025\u00a0lb \u00a0squat, a 832\u00a0lb bench press, and a 738\u00a0lb deadlift. Explains why all of the weights and equipment at Tammy’s labor of love\u00a0are all top notch!<\/span><\/p>\n

While moving iron is my interest, their swimming pool, aerobics classes and machines as well as their cross-fit programs all seem very popular too! I\u2019ve been in gyms for many years, all across the country, even in Ireland and all over\u00a0the SF Bay Area. And my experience is showing me this is easily one of the best such facilities I\u2019ve ever had the privilege of being a part of!<\/span><\/p>\n

(H) The insurance we thought we had that \u00a0the city requires \u00a0for our event fell through. Might there be anyone out there willing to put our one day event\u00a0on their homeowner’s policy? We are hearing this is not uncommon and the cost is usually $20 to 50 to do so. Can anyone help? We need this this week as the City needs time to scrutinize what we come up with…<\/span><\/p>\n

I just resurrected the storyboard that went in to storage when I went to Ireland for five years to raise my little boy. A handsome piece, we used it to display important National Bicycle Greenway documents which include photos from our annual Mayors\u2019 Rides, press about our organization that I have been able to get by using my story as well as select Proclamations in support of the NBG that we have been able to collect from big city mayors all on our route from San Francisco to Washington DC.<\/span><\/p>\n

The storyboard is three 4\u2032 x 4\u2032 attached panels that fold down to one. Covered in green felt, the edges are protected by lightweight aluminum trim\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Is there anyone out there who I can give this to along with current pictures, newspaper articles and Proclamations that would be able to take it on as a project to get it current?\u00a0<\/span>I would like to be able to have this for her booth at\u00a0 <\/span>The Whole Earth\u00a0Festival and at our Davis NBG Fest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(K)\u00a0HERE is news<\/strong> <\/a>about the Bay Bridge bike path we’ll be riding on Wed, May 25, before we meet with Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf<\/a> <\/strong>to launch the 15th annual national Mayors’ Ride that kicks off officially two days later from the Second Davis NBG Fest<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

(L) The USBRS is a great system indeed! Our route is different in that it celebrates the major cities we have identified HERE<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 that connect San Francisco with Washington DC. Our 20 Anchor cities will all be fleshed out in a way (the purpose of our crowdfunding campaign next Fall\/Winter) that turns them into magnets for bike riders wanting to explore all the places to ride, eat, sleep, shop and recreate in them. Our route can and will be monetized such that the various business communities along the way will help us improve the bicycle infrastructure that reaches their front door, etc, etc……<\/span><\/p>\n

(M) Edward Peterson, a UC Davis student, interviewed me as a class assignment. I’ve been the subject of such Q&A from all over the world and must say his result was more accurate than most:<\/span><\/p>\n

Where I met its brand new pastor, Ron Elrod<\/strong> who moved here from Santa Cruz,<\/strong> my once old stomping grounds. His wife, Denise<\/strong>, behind the camera, told me that they have a lot of work to do to renovate this 100+ year old building that is on the walking tour of Winters. Nor should that be a problem. Ron, as \u00a0it turned out, did double duty as\u00a0the head electrician at the world renowned Santa Cuz Beach and Boardwalk right before they came here!
