He had convinced them that they needed to certify\u00a0serious cyclists using the book on\u00a0Vehicular Cycling he had written called<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\" data-offset-key=\"852p-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">\u00a0&#8220;Effective Cycling&#8221;.\u00a0 As such, the League and Forester had made it clear that our coast to coast bikeway that made use of bike lanes and off road greenways was not to be considered as worthy for its dues paying members.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding: 7px;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6ooj8\" data-offset-key=\"979j-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6ooj8\" data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-0-0\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Besides LAB&#8217;s lack of interest, there was another force working against the cyclist who wanted to go for a leisurely bike ride.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Lance Armstrong. Armstrong\u00a0 made the American public think that the non smiling\u00a0 cyclists dressed in lycra\u00a0 taking the lane were on some kind of important mission, a<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">\u00a0&#8220;training ride&#8221;.\u00a0 And that any other kind of cycle trip was frivolous, not to be regarded\u00a0 as important. Glorified like a king, and seen as the face of cycling, Lance had achieved his fame and fortune\u00a0 from the same road their cars were using, why then should anything have to change to make it easier for\u00a0all these\u00a0 cyclists doing their non essential jaunts?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Well now that Lance has gone away and the folly of the Forester\u00a0method\u00a0 is now being seen for what it was, the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"_247o\" spellcheck=\"false\" data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-1-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">\u00a0National Bicycle Greenway<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9aj2g-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> is now poised to become a force too impossible to ignore. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6ooj8\" data-offset-key=\"3v400-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3v400-0-0\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\" data-offset-key=\"3v400-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6ooj8\" data-offset-key=\"8t1jh-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8t1jh-0-0\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span data-offset-key=\"8t1jh-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Having lived in both Palo Alto for a decade and Davis where the bike lane was first introduced to America, I have observed the part infrastructure, local politics and one man\u2019s strong personality have played in shaping how and where we ride our bicycles. In making the National Bicycle Greenway real, as its director, I have moved to Indianapolis where Carl Fisher ran the Linclon Highway movement that connected the coasts with its first car highway. And where <\/span><\/span><span class=\"_247o\" spellcheck=\"false\" data-offset-key=\"8t1jh-1-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8t1jh-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Ray Irvin<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8t1jh-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> turned a dying rust belt city into the Greenway Capital of America!!
