National Motor Vehicle company (located next to the Monon Greenway at 22nd in Indianapolis), built beginning in 1900, is the oldest automobile factory still standing today. One of its seven original\u00a0 founders was Arthur Newby,\u00a0one of\u00a0the three men who formed Indianapolis Chain and Stamping Company (soon called Diamond Chain). Newby was a huge part of the Indianapolis landscape. Besides being a very good friend of the legendary Carl Fisher, Newby was\u00a0 <\/span>one of the fathers of the still highly esteemed, <\/span>Butler University,<\/span> as well as the Indy 500 Motor Speedway. Newby also built <\/span>the <\/span>Newby Oval<\/span>, a short lived velodrome\u00a0<\/span>(1898-1902 at 30th and Central) in Indianapolis where Major Taylor did some of his racing and that was lighted and once one of the best in the world.<\/p>\n
