Set in the middle of downtown Indianapolis, a 1.5-mile long canal and towpath that date back to 1836, have been transformed into a water paradise. All along the full length of its 3-mile loop, there is a wide sidewalk filled with wonder. Here one can find water walls, mural art, beautiful landscaping, pedestrian overwalks, the occasional busker, even a bike bridge, etc.<\/p>\n

In the water, during the summer, there are fountains, pedal boats and kayaks as well as gondolas piloted by opera singers.<\/p>\n

A few times a year, there are swimming and canoe races and the water portion of a triathlon. Along its edges, there are cafes, museum entrances and courtyards that host music festivals, benefits and art shows. Four and sixperson rental bikes and trikes casually saunter along. They are joined by walkers, joggers and all those out for an easy, non competitive bike ride.<\/p>\n

Downtown workers use this as an escape for the peace and serenity that it provides. The public at large comes here for the sense of community of being with fellow like minded seekers of tranquility. Set apart from all the concrete and asphalt of our modern world, it is a treasure with few equals.<\/p>\n
