{"id":5620,"date":"2013-04-12T15:02:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-12T15:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bikeroute.com\/NationalBicycleGreenwayNews\/2013\/04\/12\/cyclist-injured-by-nypd-car-gets-billed-1263-for-damage-to-vehicle\/"},"modified":"2023-10-18T20:07:20","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T03:07:20","slug":"cyclist-injured-by-nypd-car-gets-billed-1263-for-damage-to-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bikeroute.com\/NationalBicycleGreenwayNews\/2013\/04\/12\/cyclist-injured-by-nypd-car-gets-billed-1263-for-damage-to-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclist Injured by NYPD Car Gets Billed $1,263 for Damage to Vehicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/road.cc\/content\/image\/80568-nypd-pete-stewart-wikimedia-commons\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"NYPD (Pete Stewart, Wikimedia Commons)\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/road.cc\/sites\/default\/files\/imagecache\/preview_500\/images\/News\/NYPD%20%28Pete%20Stewart%2C%20Wikimedia%20Commons%29.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" title=\"\" width=\"500\"><\/a><span>NYPD (Pete Stewart, Wikimedia Commons)<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>A cyclist in New York City who was hospitalised after being struck by an unmarked police car has spoken of his disbelief after being billed more than $1,200 for the damage that happened to the vehicle during the incident.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/local\/brooklyn\/biker_dent_do_it_uEA4ZUy6dv6KqwUV9F5bXK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a><span><\/span>, it\u2019s at least the third time in recent months that city authorities have sent victims bills in similar circumstances \u2013 and each time, they have quietly dropped the demand for money after being challenged.<\/div>\n<div>The latest bill, in the sum of $1,263, was received by Justin Johnsen, a 31-year-old resident of South Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who was riding his bike to work as a design-engineer in Red Hook last November when he was hit by a Ford Taurus that happened to be an unmarked police car.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI think it\u2019s preposterous,\u201d said Johansen of the bill he received. \u201cI was upset,\u201d continued the cyclist, who had to visit hospital after the incident to have stitches inserted in wounds to his arms.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was in kind of disbelief that they were going to send this letter after four months or so and ask me to pay damages for their vehicle, when they hit me when I was on a bicycle.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Describing the background to the incident, which happened at 8.30 in the morning on 5 November, he said: \u201cI had left the bike lane to make a left turn, and I looked behind me and saw that it was clear, and the farthest car was a fair distance.<\/div>\n<div>He indicated to turn, but said that before he could do so, he \u201cwas swiped by this car on my left side. I didn\u2019t feel too good . . .
