In her six-year tenure, Sadik-Khan has made a lot of changes.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
She focused on reducing the number of cars on NYC streets. She built\u00a0<\/span>hundreds of miles of bike lanes, introduced a hugely successful bike\u00a0<\/span>share program, created pedestrian plazas, and transformed Times Square.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Between 2007 and 2011, the number of New Yorkers commuting by bicycle\u00a0<\/span>doubled, meeting a DOT goal ahead of schedule.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
To triple that number by 2017, Sadik-Khan led the installation of 350\u00a0<\/span>miles of bike lanes on streets throughout New York, providing a\u00a0<\/span>relatively safe way for cyclists to get around.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The bike lanes have aroused plenty of criticism, largely from\u00a0<\/span>neighborhood groups. At a 2011 event at the Center for Architecture,\u00a0<\/span>Sadik-Khan defended the expansion as a public good:<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cSome people have tried to paint bike lanes as elitist, which is really\u00a0<\/span>hard to believe because [the bicycle] is the most affordable way to \u00a0get\u00a0<\/span>around town other than walking, and it\u2019s really heavily used by a wide\u00a0<\/span>range of social and ethnic groups.”<\/span><\/div>\n
