2014 Report by\u00a0Steve Stevens<\/a><\/p>\n

O<\/span>n the NBG Mayors Sustainability Tour for Thomas Stevens 130th Anniversary<\/strong> we visited the following sites:<\/p>\n

1) The Bike Trail made from the old rail line of the Denver-Golden \u201cInterurban\u201d (also called the \u201cBeer Run\u201d in the day) more info<\/a><\/p>\n

2) The Welch Ditch \u2013 an 1872 irrigation ditch which fed the fruit orchards on the sides of South Table Mountain more info <\/a>and more<\/a><\/p>\n

3) The Church Ditch \u2013 which feeds North Suburban towns from \u201cClear Creek\u201d \u2013 a mighty Colorado River through Golden. It\u00a0comes from the continental divide.<\/p>\n

4) The USGS Earth Quake Center\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

5) The Colorado School of Mines<\/a> \u2013 the MIT or Cal Tech of the Mountain West\u2026. With a very top rateing in the education world.<\/p>\n

6) Golden City Hall \u2013 Where our progressive City Council and Outstanding City Staff \u2013 along with our lovely and wise Mayor Marjorie Sloan craft and execute policies which have brought Golden forward strongly over the last two decades.<\/p>\n

7) The Bike Path along the Clear Creek Whitewater Park<\/a><\/p>\n

8) The Bike Path along the Golden Community Gardens\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

9) The Community Center<\/a> \u2013 with gymnasiums, swimming pool etc. The pool is heated with Solar Thermal Water Panels on the Roof.<\/p>\n

10) A set of Row Houses which exhibit Solar PV as well as Solar Thermal Water panels facing SSE for capturing the gifts of the Sun.<\/p>\n

11) The Coors Brewery \u2013 which is the largest in the world on one site. It has several programs which optimize the second career of the materials involved in the brewing process.<\/p>\n

12) The Golden Bike Park \u2013 a Mountain Bike training park\u2026 great addition to Golden\u2019s Parks about 4 years ago. info<\/a>\u00a0| more<\/a><\/p>\n

13) A special \u201cin ground sustainable home\u201d \u2013 Earth Sheltered.<\/p>\n

14) The greenhouse, headquarters, and Growing Fields of Agriburbia\u2026. A lawn transformation company \u2013 organically turning lawns to veggie gardens –\u00a0news story<\/a><\/p>\n

15) A Straw Bale Church addition \u2013 Second Sanctuary \u2013 at the Jefferson Unitarian Church<\/a>.<\/p>\n

16) A 10,000 watt Photovoltaic addition to the Unitarian Church.<\/p>\n

17) A second lawn transformation company \u2013 turning lawns to veggies the rough scrap way \u2013 with cardboard, sticks, straw, and composted cow manure.<\/p>\n

18) The National Renewable Energy Laboratory<\/a>\u2026 (NREL) \u2026. And it\u2019s visitor center (and waterless urinals as well as water faucets).<\/p>\n

19) An alpaca farm in the back yard of a duplex home. This Alpace farm \u2013 in addition to producing fine fibres \u2013 provides the \u201cChampaign of Shit\u201d to gardeners\u2026 Alpaca Poo (say \u201cPoo\u201d with a Lilt in your voice \u2026 to show due respect) is non-smelly, non \u2013 burning, fine material for soil amendments in the clay coils of the Rocky Mountains. 20) Golden Oldy Cyclery<\/a>\u00a0 | YouTube story<\/a>)\u2013 \u201cThe Sustainable Museum of Sustainable Transportation\u201d with its transformed structure envelope ( to R-104 on the Dining Room wall ) and passive, active,\u00a0and garden Solar Collection. \u00a0 \u00a0\u2026 the only known \u201cCarbon Negative\u201d Museum in the world.\u00a0At Golden Oldy, we viewed the historic evolution of the bicycle from 1868 through 1899\u2026. Reflecting upon it\u2019s amazing inventions.\u00a0We viewed the 50 inch Columbia Standard bicycle \u2013 from 1879 \u2013 at the Thomas Stevens ride display.<\/p>\n

The temps for the ride were in the 70s and even hit 80 in places\u2026 unlike last year\u2019s NBG \/ Earth Day Ride \u2026 which started out sunny and warm \u2013 anad turned on a dive to low 20s temperatures with strong winds and flying snow which chased us…. home quickly.<\/p>\n
