National Bicycle Greenway in action
San Joes to Palo Alto

Here's a suggested route from San Jose new City Hall (200 Santa Clara St. between 5th and 6th Streets) to Palo Alto City Hall (Bryant Bike Blvd & Hamilton). It has lots of twists and turns on paper.  But it's not hard to navigate. I don't use a cyclometer, so all distances are estimates. Total distance is probably about 18-20 miles:

Go north on 6th St, continue about .5 miles
Left on Jackson St, continue two blocks
Right on 4th St, continue about a 1.5 mile to end
L on Old Bayshore Hwy (at end of 4th)
R on First St (careful thru freeway interchange); continue about 1 mile
L on Trimble, continue about .7 mile
R on De La Cruz, continue about mile
Cross Montague Expwy (De La Cruz becomes Agnews), continue about 1.5 mile
R on San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail (just before Freedom Circle),
Continue about 2 miles, go under Hwy 237, follow trail U-turn to link with Hwy 237 path
R (west) on Hwy 237 Path (at end of San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail)
Continue about 1 mile on Hwy 237 path
Continue west about .3 mile thru Sunnyvale Baylands Park
L to Sunnyvale Baylands Park exit, straight across Caribbean Dr to Moffet Park Dr
Continue on Moffet Park Dr for about 3.5 miles
L on Ellis at end of Moffet Park Dr, go under freeway
R on Fairchild Dr, continue about .3 mile
L on Whisman, continue about .6 mile
R on Middlefield, continue about 3 mile
L onto Middlefield (at merge with Old Middlefield)
Continue across San Antonio, careful - bike lanes go away for 3-4 blocks, continue 1 mile
L on Meadow, continue about .5 mile
R on Bryant St, continue about 2.5 miles into downtown Palo Alto
